They made a lot of the students in the films up for dramatic purposes, but other than that, not a lot of it was a lot different than the film. In real life, Joe Clark was the principal at Eastside High in Patterson, New Jersey, and he got in there and cleaned the place up getting rid of all the drug dealers and trouble makers. He also pushed the students for scholastic aptitude and turned the overall GPA's of most of the students around by implementing more strict teaching curriculum's and boosting school morale. He wasn't well liked by a good deal of the student's parents, clashed with the local Fire Marshall for chaining the doors to keep the trash out, and most of the other things portrayed in the film. Overall, the film is a drama, so it is not 100% but it is a good interpretation of the truth.
