Why didnt the Claudius confront Hamlet directley after the death of polonius?

There is no background on Claudius' rule. He could have very well have been a better king than Hamlet's father. Hamlet was so consumed with hatred, that he did not even kill the king for the people, he killed him for himself. Plus, he left the nation powerless to the invading nation. He was selfish and filled with hatred. If he had a problem with Claudius and his Mother, he should have talked it out with them. Claudius brought in Hamlet's friends to find out what was wrong with him, and all Hamlet did was have them killed. Hamlet was not a tragic hero, he was a villain.

Why does hamlet stop before he commits violence upon Gertrude?

Initially Hamlet is uncertain about the honesty of the ghost. Then he loses an opportunity when he decides not to kill Claudius in the confessional because his soul will go to heaven. Then he becomes involved in plot that finds him bound or transported away from Claudius for a good portion of the play. He is also filled with self-doubt about his ability to kill him, and the nature of his existence, which causes delay.

What was Hamlet named after?

Etymology of HamletHamlet's name is filled with meaning and controversy. The name Hamlet occurs as early as the 10th century. His name is easily derived in form from Belleforest and the lost play from Amlethus of Saxo, and remaining in this form is then derived from its Latin form of the old Jutish Amlethoe. From this point the name can be divided into sections with common meanings. In terms of etymology the root name of Hamlet is an Icelandic noun, Amlooi, meaning 'fool.' However, this name is derived from the way that Hamlet acts in the play and is not in all actuality the true etymology of the name. The second way of translating the name is by analyzing the noun aml-ooi into 'raving mad' and the second half, amla into 'routine'. Later these names were incorporated into Irish dialect as Amlodhe. As phonetic laws took their course the name's spelling changed eventually leaving it as Amlaidhe. This Irish name was given to a hero in a common folk story. The root of this name is 'furious, raging, wild.' These are all meanings Shakespeare would have been aware of when deciding on the name for his longest play.[1] Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Hamlet

Those friends thou hast and their adoption tried Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new-hatch'd unfledg'd comrade.- what does it mean?

This is a line from Hamlet and is spoken by Polonius upon his death. It's a pretty straight forward quote but I'll translate it really quickly "The friends that you have, and who you have gone through great challenges with, hold them close to you forever. Don't throw these people aside for each new "friend" you meet because they havent earned your trust" The above answer is incorrect. It is from Hamlet and it is spoken by Polonius. However, it was spoken to Polonius's son Laertes, as he was leaving to return to France after the wedding of Claudius to Gertrude. The speech contains the more famous lines, "Neither borrower nor a lender be..." (1,iii). The speech is a troubling one as it comes from a father imparting advice to a son who has already been living abroad and the advice seems unnecessary since Laertes is already independent. As well, the speech is at times filled with insights, however the character of Polonius is revealed later to be untrusting and he actually sends a spy to find out how Laertes is really living. Polonius encourages the spy to use entrapment techniques to get the real news about on Laertes. So although the speech is filled with memoriable advice, I cannot help but consider the source. Polonius dies later in act three while spying on Hamlet in his mother's closet. He dies being a very foolish, old and ingratiating character.
