"Troy" was loosely based upon the Greek classic written by Homer entitled " The Iliad " .
The movie "Troy" wasn't based on a book called Troy. It was based on The Iliad by Homer. The Iliad tells only a small portion of the 10 year Trojan War--about 9 weeks, I believe. The move "Troy" is a condensed version of The Iliad.

In the book "The Odyssey" Troy is the city that Odysseus was attacking.
The movie is no substitute for the book. Apart from the obvious things suchs as the fact the book is a poem. The Trojan horse is never in the book. I didn't even see it mentioned. There were also two Ajax brothers in the book. And they never infiltrate Troy in the book. The war is not won but it is mention somewhere halfway through the book that the Greeks were going to win. The book ends with the funerary games of Patroclus. Also, Achilles in the book is cries far too much and behaves like a little kid. Always depending from his mom.
