It is difficult to estimate the exact number of slaves who survived slavery as many historical records are incomplete. However, it is known that some individuals did survive and eventually gained their freedom through various means such as escape, purchase, or emancipation.
Frederick Douglass runs away from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland in 1838. He escapes to New York City, where he begins his journey to freedom and becomes an abolitionist and key figure in the anti-slavery movement.
The Black Panthers advocated violent solutions to the discrimination African-Americans suffered for over one hundred years after the abolition of slavery during the 1960s.
Slave resistance at the Cape was primarily caused by harsh working conditions, brutal treatment, and the desire for freedom and dignity. Effects of slave resistance included violent uprisings, sabotage, escapes, and formation of maroon communities. These acts of resistance highlighted the inherent injustice of slavery and contributed to the eventual abolition of slavery in the Cape Colony.
One way slaves resisted slavery was by engaging in acts of sabotage, such as breaking tools or slowing down work. Another way was by feigning illness or working slowly to disrupt the efficiency of plantation operations. Some slaves also escaped and sought freedom through the Underground Railroad or by forming maroon communities.
