If one chooses to use figures instead of words in a sentence/paragraph one must be consistent. That is use ONLY figures or ONLY words and do not mix them both.

The functions of figures of speech?

It is good to study figures of speech so that you can recognize them in conversation later in life. People use them a lot, and since figures of speech aren't literal, straight interpretations of the words used, it is easy to get confused. If you didn't know some figures of speech, certain conversations could fly right over your head. ;) Here is a wikipedia article on the subject with some excellent material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figure_of_speech

How do you write a precis of a passage in English language according to ICSE Board India?

Comprehend the whole passage in atleast two readings, look the question for which you gotta write the precis, find that portion in the comprehension passage, get eight points(keywords) from there, form it into sentences, use pronouns, use synonyms for those words(don't copy as it is), use single words for long sentences(that is comprehend the meaning, and get a single word for that), accomodate all the points in 60 words only( but its a rule to allow 60+2 or60-2 words). Go ahead with these guidelines. I hope it helps..!
