The words spoken by the actors and directions for the movie's producers

Another Answer

A screenplay contains all directions for visual storytelling. Elements include:

  • Scene setting, description and lighting
  • Action descriptions -- non-dialog actor motions, background action, special effects setups and so forth
  • Character descriptions -- age, key character tags
  • Dialog
  • Extraordinary sound effects

All elements are organized and arranged in a specific format so that each page of screenplay is about one minute of film time.

  • A producer uses a film script to create a budget for the movie and hire the director, actors and other crew. The producer is responsible for finding the money to pay the bills for making the movie
  • A director uses the script as a guide for telling the story visually.
  • An actor uses the script to discover the character, including words spoken during the time the character is visibly involved in moving the story forward.
  • All crafts people use the script to establish makeup/ hair, costumes, set design, sound design, locations, lighting, camera angles and more.

And so forth.

Depending on which version of a screenplay you're referencing -- a shooting script is different from a spec script: a feature film screenplay is different from a television screenplay.

Read more, below.

In addition, you can purchase specialized screenwriting software that will help you with the format. More importantly, Hollywood-centric screenwriting tools are the standard of the film industry, so that when you sell your script written using one of these tools, you save the producer the expense of converting your format to the industry standard.
