Dunno. As far as i know, al never becomes the philosiphers stone. I believe you might be talking about FMA, but i assure you, as enjoyable as it is, FMA isn't the true story. If you wanna Know what really happens, i suggest you watch FMA:B or read the manga.
Personally I believe that FMA Brotherhood is better. after watching that series watch the original FMA. its got a bit more story, but you need to watch brotherhood first
You can watch "Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa" which follows Ed after he went through the gate . FMA Brotherhood is a more faithful adaptation from the original manga .

FMA brotherhood is out!!! you can watch it on hulu.com. it slightly differs from the funimation series, as well as the manga.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is basicly the same thing as Full Metal Alchemist but Fma Brotherhood follows the plot of the manga more that Fma. So Fma Brotherhood is NOT a continuation of Fma.
Yes, the animes are considered separate, and there is no information that you would need to know from the original to understand brotherhood.
The fourth ending for FMA Brotherhood is Shinkan Sentimental by Scandal. I hope that answered your question!
