He resigned as managing Director of the White Star Line soon after the tragedy, and spent the rest of his life living in seclusion on the West Coast of Ireland until his death in 1937, wracked with guilt and shame over the disaster. Although the tragedy was not his fault, he nonetheless felt personally responsible for the loss of so many lives and held himself to be little better than a mass murderer.
