I have never heard of such a thing. Planting the flag was very important, symbolic of the exploration achievement. Some people mistakenly think that planting the flag meant we were taking possession of the Moon. Just not true.
However, there was some hesitation by the astronauts, not because they were against the flag, but because the decision to plant the flag was a last-minute addition to an already packed EVA schedule (in fact, the flag was installed onto the leg of the LM less than 12 hours before launch, while the machine sat on the launch pad and nestled atop the Saturn V's S-IVB section). The year Neil Armstrong put the flag on the moon was in 1969.
