The first ship to sail from Scotland with settlers to Port Chalmers, near Dunedin, which was the main Scottish settlement in New Zealand, was the Philip Laing which sailed from Greenock on 23/11/1847 and arrived in Port Chalmers on 23/3/1848. The John Wickliffe arrived earlier but sailed from Gravesend, Kent, England.
The city was named by the Canterbury Association, which settled the surrounding province of Canterbury. The name was suggested by John Robert Godley, who had attended Christ Church, Oxford and was agreed on at the first meeting of the association on 27 March 1848.
