On 10 April 1968, the inter island steamer Wahine, around 9000 tons, foundered near the entrance of Wellington Harbour, with the loss of 53 lives. Due to extreme weather conditions; which caused widespread damage elsewhere; the vessel entered an inappropriate passage into the harbour.
