Elphaba Thropp comes from a long line of residents of the Blue Munchkin Country of the East.

Specifically by way of her mother, Melena Thropp, she is the descendant of the Peerless Eminent Thropp. In fact, it is by way of this eminent bloodline that Elphaba's sister, Nessarose, claims rulership over Munchkinland. Indeed, it is because of her position as ruler that Nessarose finds her life ended when Dorothy Gale's house lands on top of her in "The Wizard of Oz." Nessarose thereby is remembered for all time as the Wicked Witch of the East whom Dorothy's house kills, and from whom Dorothy gets the powerful Slippers.
