It depends on the film and how comfortable the parent is to let them go by themselves- they can go to see a U or a PG by themselves from fairly young. Only children over the age of twelve can see a 12 on their own, and children under twelve can see a 12a, but they must be accompanied by an adult.

All ages are accepted at movie theatres. However, for R-rated movies, a parent or adult guardian must accompany people under 17. And for NC-17, no one under 17 is admitted.

Cinemas themselves may impose age limits... there are, for example, "boutique" movie theaters that only allow those 21 or over. These usually have more comfortable chairs (sometimes even recliners), often serve alcohol, and cost significantly more than the family multiplex down the street; part of what you're paying for is NOT having screaming kids running amuck during the movie.

There's also your parents to consider. If you're under the age of majority (often 18) and your parents say you're not allowed to go to the movies, then you're not allowed to go to the movies, even if all your friends of the same age are.
