They settled along and above small streams. The rain in this part of the country runs off bare rock, often Navajo Sandstone formation, and collects in narrow canyons. Most of the Anasazi homes are along the sides of such canyons. Many are year round. We believe that excessive logging in some places caused down-cutting of the canyons and lowered the water table thus making farming in these area less viable. Also it appears the patterns of when and how much rain fell changed. Presumably some Anasazi farmed like their descendants the Hopi do today. They farm in run off areas and often use sand as a kind of mulch. The variety of corn they grow is lower and bushier and grows up from deep planting in the damp sand. Other Anasazi may have farmed like their other descendants the Eastern Pueblo people, who use irrigation. The Hohokam people to the south large scale irrigation and we know they traded with and visited them. The Navajo farm in some of these same Anasazi areas to this day, so we know it is very viable.

The area they lived is between 4,500 and 8,000 feet in elevation. Although it is dry, there is snow in the winter and a monsoon rain in the summer. In good years, in the right places, there is enough soil moisture to raise corn, beans and squash. The narrow deep canyons in the sandstone collect quite a bit of water and make the canyon bottoms fertile places. Some techniques still used today by the Hopi and Zuni are: planting in deep in sand so it acts like a mulch, planting in flood planes where water runs off the mesas, digging a waffle like pattern to plant in so the water is consecrated, mulching with rock, using check dams, weeding well, clumping the corn in six plants to reduce wind dehydration,
