Playing with her pet dog Toto is Dorothy's main interest in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, Dorothy Gale lives on a farm with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Life on the farm isolates Dorothy from other children, and money is tight. Consequently, Dorothy has few options for hobbies and interests.

Family, friends and home are Dorothy Gale's likes and being away from home and in eerie situations are her dislikes in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, these are the likes and dislikes that are common to both the original 1900 book edition and the beloved 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz." For example, in both the original 1900 book edition and the beloved 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz," Dorothy likes Uncle Henry and Aunt Em and their home in Kansas. She particularly likes her pet dog Toto. She learns to like her traveling companions, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman. Additionally, she seems to find Glinda the Good likable. But as much as she has her likes, she really keeps away from expressing strong dislikes other than a discomfort level over creepy, eerie, unpleasant environments and an exasperation over not being back in Kansas.

Perhaps Elphaba may be said to have no hobbies. A hobby is a leisure time activity. At first, it seems that Elphaba's interest in the talking Animals of Oz qualifies as a hobby. But it's quickly apparent that her interest becomes so passionate that it ends up becoming more of a political cause.

The same may be said of her interest in her extraordinary powers. That interest isn't a leisure time activity. Once again, her commitment quickly takes on the expression of an individual passionately involved in an altruistic or humanitarian endeavor.

Getting herself and her pet dog Toto back to their home in Kansas is what motivates Dorothy Gale throughout the book and the filmed versions of "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, a cyclone relocates Dorothy, Toto and the family farmhouse all the way over to the other side of the rainbow. There, Dorothy finds beautiful, enchanted, magical lands that are home to some very likeable and some very unlikeable people. Dorothy and Toto have the same reactions: they just want to get back home to Dorothy's Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.
