They are known for a fascinating traditional culture and language that is still alive today. They are known for the code that was developed using the Navajo language in WWII. The Japanese couldn't decode the messages that were being sent back and forth. Even Navajo speakers could not understand it. These Navajo were called Code Talkers. β 10y agoNavajo are not the richest tribe and the per capita income is very low and the unemployment is very high.
However, traditional Navajo believe says it is not money that makes one rich. You need a balance of four things.
1)Many livestock
2) A hoghan
3) Many children and relatives and proper relationship with your clans (K'e)
4) Much ritual knowledge, prayers, songs and chants and rituals. A life of prayer, balance, beauty inside and out and keeping in hózhǫ́.
Many older traditional people have these things and live a long life in beauty. Therefore even if they have very few material things and may appear poor they often feel rich.
