I guess there are bad words because sometimes we want to communicate bad things. We want to yell at someone, or offend them, or tell them that we hate them. Most bad words are about emphasis, but they aren't used in polite society because we are emphasizing something negative. We make up rude words for other races or groups of people because we don't relate to them, and we don't like them because they are different. We call people we know rude things because we're angry or we are trying to build our own egos by stepping on others. Maybe if we were all really good all the time, we wouldn't have a use for bad words anymore. ... But for now, people still want to emphasize negative things, mock, scorn, and offend... and so there are words that accomodate those desires.

There are bad words as in swear words or words that humans make up as we grow and start to understand different things in a different way. There are "bad" words that are confusing, inappropriate, or misused. Most people, even children, know what 'bad words' are, but many people don't know why a 'bad word' is a 'bad word'. Words and phrases that are considered bad language and that are inappropriate to say are deemed 'bad language' because the word or phrase is:

• historically offensive to a group of people, often derogatory to a race, class, or group of people from a certain religion or culture
• historically reflect or call to mind unusual cruelty and barbarism toward one race, class, or group of people
• historically remind the offended group of inappropriate and inhumane treatment of their own person, or of their parents, grandparents, relatives, and even extended to their heritage
• historically reflect the sexualization, abuse, and victimization of females of all races based solely on gender
• are currently deemed socially offensive to ALL or ANY person
• are offensive to a person or group based on their sexuality or sexual preferences
• are forms of bullying and cruelty, e.g. name calling
• are words that 'hurt', just as much as yielding a whip or stick or stoning a person
• are 'slang' words with a new twisted meaning of a racial slur or other inappropriate language
• specifically reference the genitals of either males or females
• are designed to put yourself 'one up' and above any other person
• are any of the above, but mis-spelled as attempts to slip an insult by a reader online, in online forums or posts, in E-mail or Texting.

A bad word is a word that could offend others because of the subject matter or inference of the word. Bad words are usually used to insult, criticize, or complain, but not always. Some people use them for normal emphasis, and don't mean anything negative. They can still offend even so, because of the way society views the words, and what is acceptable or not acceptable in polite society. Bad words vary in different populations, so knowing what to avoid when you are in a different culture (even within your own country), can be helpful.

Bad words in slang are somewhat subjective, but most people will agree on the curse words. You can do an internet search for swear words and find lists of bad words on the web, curse words and more.

Even hard core curse words spoken sparingly and sprinkled lightly now and then or in written language can color one's prose dramatically.

But you need to be aware there are people of culture who refuse to tolerate anything even resembling a curse word spoken in their presence, because cursing makes them feel disrespected. The slang term for someone so high class as this is virgin ears.
