There are many cultures in South Africa, so there is no one national dish or food type. In larger cities most national cusines are represented, though often in a lowest-common denominator way. For example, the Big Mac burger is readily available.

The dominant culture is African, which is also quite diverse, but most groups would recognise the following simple components as a traditional meal.

  • Barbecued meat. Locally called a Braai
  • Maize, boiled. As a stiff or crumbly porridge. Locally called Pap
  • Spinach and other edible leafy vegetables, boiled. Locally and traditionally called Marogo
  • What you may know as Jerky originated in South Africa and is locally called biltong.

Because there are many ethnic groups living in South Africa, there are many different recipes with origins in countries like India, Malaysia, Netherlands, Afrikaan, United Kingdom, and Portugal. While a popular Indian dish is bunny chow, some Dutch dishes are fried crueler and malva pudding. Other popular foods are different types of curries, sambals, and fish stew.
