Here are some good ways everybody can conserve electricity:

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room
  • Turn off appliances that are not being used, like the TV or radio or a fan
  • Make sure all of your equipment is in good working order so it doesn't use up extra electricity
  • Clean your air filters so your air conditioner won't use extra electricity and overheat
  • Keep your curtains and doors closed so that the cool or warm air inside your home doesn't escape
  • Dress suitably so you don't always have to run the heater or air conditioner
  • Wash your clothes in cold water when you can
  • Insulate your house properly so your heater and air conditioner aren't over-worked
  • Plug all of your electronics into a power strip - then turn it off when you leave the room
  • Use energy-efficient appliances and electronics
  • Dust the coils on your fridge and keep the freezer full for maximum efficiency
  • Wash and dry several loads of clothes at once so that the dryer isn't always having to heat up between cycles
  • Use high-performance windows instead of just regular glass that doesn't insulate as well

Most electricity in the world is produced by burning fossil fuel, coal, oil and natural gas. This adds to the carbon dioxide greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

We can save electricity by:

  • turning off lights when we leave a room.
  • turning off heating and air conditioning when nobody is home.
  • turning computers and other appliances off at the wall, rather than leaving them on stand-by.
  • get rid off that old second fridge that's running in the garage.
  • stop using the clothes dryer; hang the clothes out to dry in the sun and wind.
  • use the clothes washing machine only when you have a full load.
  • just boil enough water in the kettle for what you need.
  • Microwaves and pressure cookers cook food much more quickly and save energy.
  • Change lighting for compact fluorescent lights or LED lights
  • Install water saving shower rose and tap aerators
  • Insulation can save 30% in heating and cooling costs
  • Roof ventilation can reduce temperatures by 5 degrees Celsius.
  • Window tinting can stop 80% of solar radiation.
  • Set cooling for 24 degrees Celsius and heating at 20 degrees Celsius.
  • Control the space for heating and cooling by closing doors, windows and stopping drafts.
  • Turn off entertainment equipment at the wall when not in use. Or consider a remote controlled power board or master controlled power board.
  • Use cold water for the washing machine.
  • Use clothes line rather than dryer.
  • Turn off fridges that do not need to be in use.
  • Consider timers on lighting, heating, cooling, pumps etc..
  • Turn on computer power management with screen power down at 15 minutes and computer sleep in 30 minutes of inactivity.
  • Use laptops instead of desktop for efficiency.
  • Look for new computers with Energy Star 4 and 80 Plus standards.
  • Look for new appliances with 1 watt standby and are top performers in Energy Stars.
  • Shut down a computer when not in use.
  • Consider a USB controlled power board to turn off all the computer peripherals when computer is not in use.
  • Consider measuring power consumption. $30 for power point measurement. $100 for building power measurement.
  • Get real time results, daily / weekly / monthly totals in watts or dollars.
  • Do not switch on the TV when you are doing something else .
  • Turn off unneeded lights and appliances.
  • Keep electric heat at a minimum temperature, 68 degrees is good.
  • Keep air conditioning around 72 degrees.
  • Open doors and windows and don't use the AC.
  • Open outside doors less often - keep in warm or cool air.
  • Block drafts at bottom of doors with a rug, towel, or sheet.
  • Hang laundry on a line outside and use the electric dryer less often.
  • Place plastic over windows for insulation.
  • Weather stripping around outside doors.
  • You can CALL or go on-line to your local utility provider and request service FREE to evaluate why your bills are the way they are and they will give you advice on what to do - Most if your diligent - They have offers (If you ask - they don't advertise) to help you out FREE by exchanging your old refrigerator with a brand new energy efficient one, insulating your house (yes- they did mine), weather proofing your windows, even replacing doors and replacing water heaters and window A/C if you qualify. BUT It's worth checking out!
