Traditionally, the familiar round or 6 or 8 sided hooghan, which is called a "female" hooghan, is made of logs and earth. The roof is corbeled and the walls are log cabin style and the earth is on the roof or over the whole thing. The door faces east. There is a smoke hole in the center of the roof. There are no windows. The floor was dirt.

They have also been made of stone and now modern stick frame construction. Many have wood stoves. Some have windows today. To be usable for ceremonies there has to be four intial support logs, one for each direction and the floor must have access to the earth.

The hogan is described in the creation stories in the same section as the birth of Changing Woman.

There is another, less common type of hooghan, the male or forked stick one. It looks more like a earth covered log and pole tepee. Small ones are used as sweat lodges.
