She had him on a tight leash, often shouting out orders to him like a drill sergeant He said in an interview that he has been too timid to stand up for himself, and within the last couple of months, he finally has. This caused their separation. He is a laid-back, easygoing down-to-earth guy and she (because of their success on the show) has turned into a greedy, overbearing control freak. She has become self-involved, and loves to soak up all the attention from the media. Jon is just the opposite. He wants privacy, and a normal lifestyle. I'm sure he enjoys his new fortune like anyone would, but he would rather be low-key about it. This is the fundamental and underlying problem which caused them to separate. As far as his "affair" is concerned, it really doesn't matter what he did at that point, he had already decided that he was done with Kate and her tight control on him. I am happy for him, that he stood his ground, and wasn't afraid to go on alone without Kate. He's a free man now, able to make his own decisions and live his life the way he wants to. The separation is good all-around for everyone in the family. It's good for the kids not to be subjected to arguments, it's good for Jon to have his freedom, it's good for Kate for her to get a reality check (and hopefully understand that her new conceited attitude is ruining her reputation and causing hurt to people close to her). They are doing the right thing. It's the best decision in their case. They are handling it well to keep their viewers informed, but without going into too much detail.
