A sabot (word means shoe) allows the firing of a smaller projectile at very high speeds. As an example, the standard 30-06 rifle fires a .30 caliber bullet at about 2600 feet per second. But the same cartridge, firing a .25 caliber bullet in a sabot, drives that smaller, lighter bullet at about 4,500 fps. Sabot rounds are used by tanks to fire a small diameter projectile that looks like a dart- capable of penetrating the armor of another tank at very great ranges.

A sabot is made of plastic?

The exact nature of a sabot's construction depends on its use. In modern eras rifle sabots are generally made out of plastic. Sabots for artillery pieces are generally metal of some sort. In older weapons such as those from the Napoleonic Era wooden sabots were the most common. There have however been many variations through time. Sabot construction is determined by factors such as if it can survive contact with rifling (if any is present), if it can withstand the high gas pressures long enough to exit the barrel, what effect it will have on the barrel, and a host of other factors. Plastics tend to be used in modern smallarms because with the proper application they can survive the process long enough to do their job, are inexpensive, and do not cause unusual wearing on a rifled barrel the way certain metals can. They do however have their limits. The US military once experimented with 7.62mm sabots to fire 5.56 rounds from the M-60 and discovered that it was a bad idea. Namely because the heating of the barrel would cause the sabots to melt, and that melted plastic would soon clog the barrel of the weapon.

What is the root word of sabotage?

Sabot is the French word for the wooden shoe, and the verb saboter (rattle the sabots) means first to work hurriedly and sloppily, and then by extension, to do it deliberately. Sabotage is the act of deliberately doing sloppy work.In the French railway strike of 1910 the strikers brought the railways to a halt by knocking out the wooden shoes call sabots which held the rails in place - hence sabotage.

Will sabot slugs shoot through a smooth bore barrel?

Yes. That's the only type of shotgun you should fire a sabot slug from. Rifled shotguns are intended for rifled slugs only. Actually, the opposite is true. Rifled slugs are preferred for smooth barreled shotguns. The 'rifling' on the slug is actually just fins that permit the slug to squeeze through the choke on the shotgun barrel. Sabot slugs are intended for rifled barrels, as they will give better accuracy. Some sabots may be used in smooth barrels, but you are paying more for sabots and not getting the accuracy you would get by using a sabot in a rifled barrel.

What size ball is used in a 50 caliber muzzle loader?

Assuming you are talking about shooting a patched round ball, then .490 would be the most normal ball size for a 50 caliber. Of course other types of projectile might be used, such as maxi-balls or bullets with sabots, depending upon the type of gun and the purpose of shooting.

What is 'les sabots de Noël' when translated from French to English?

un sabot (masc.) is a wooden shoe (a clog). Les sabots de Noël would be translated "the Christmas clogs", which does not really mean anything. It's more likely to be "les cadeaux de Noël" (the Christmas gifts), although in the countryside a century ago, clogs were put besides the chimney on Christmas Eve, instead of stocking or socks.
