Since books and movies are very different mediums there is usually some discrepency
between the book and the movie form. Many of the racing statistics were rejected for the book. Statistics are not visually appealing. In the movie Charles Howard had only one son, who died in a truck wreck. One of Howard's son's did die but as an adult and he had at least four other children. But the integrity of the story was never compromised when transformed into the movie.
Most books that are later made into movies need adjustments to make them appealing to that format, books and movies being two completely different mediums. That being said, the 2003 movie was basically true to the bestselling book by Laura Hillenbrand.
In real life, Charles Howard had five children. One son died but not as a child and not in a car accident. In the movie Charles meets and then marries his second wife Marcella while in Mexico. Actually, Marcella's sister was married to one of Charles Howard's son. They were already well aquainted. Many of the techincal aspects of the book had to be left out due to time constrictions for movies.
But the important points in the story remained in the movie, and it did not stray too often into fiction, for Hollywood, that's saying alot.
in movie, Scarlett doesn't have a son fathered by Charles Hamilton
