In many languages the grammatical form of the verb changes according to the speaker's attitude to what is going on.

English has relatively few grammatical voices, but:

The boy hits the ball : is active indicative (someone does something);

The boy is hit by the ball: is passive indicative (something happens to someone);

If the boy hit the ball, we may get all four bases home: is subjunctive (something might happen, we don't know for sure).

Many languages have many more than three voices (active indicative, passive indicative, subjunctive) - but English gets along quite well with two and a bit. (Many people manage without the subjunctive, they would say 'If the boy hits the ball ...' - which is just as correct).
