The biggest advice I can give you is to stray away from typical, usual, common musicals. For example, lots of people are using the following for auditions:
High School Musical
High School Musical 2
Camp Rock
Wicked
Grease
Hairspray
Mamma Mia!
Spring Awakening
Pick a song that showcases your vocal range, talent, skills, and personal style. Do not sing a song you don't feel comfortable with or like the way you perform in.
I think that Oliver, Seussical, and Annieare good plays for families. For a date, a love play, like Beauty and the Beast or Joseph and the Amazing Technical Dream Coat. A love musical is The Pajama Game!!!! Cats is a fun play, but it is also a scary play for the whole family.
Dolly, Les Miserables, West Side Story, Seussical. These are all Excellent shows if your going for a spectacle. For a smaller production Annie is good, as is Aladdin or any other Disney show. If you want something "popular" that will draw people in not only to auditions but also the audience, Wizard Of Oz is always an excellent choice, High School Musical as well :)
I hope I was of help to you (^^)
