Shrek, Frankenstein, the Hulk (see for example the recent movie, The Avengers).
He used his imagination, like all fiction writers do. But some of the characters in the movie Titanic are, in fact, based on real people. Jack and Rose, however, are not; they are fictional.
The Book is a lot different then the Movie. The movie and the play have scenes switched around from the novel, and the novel has different names for some of the characters. The movie also has different relationships with the characters. For instance, Madame Giry is not the caretaker of Christine Daae in the novel, but a box keeper for the Phantom. There are many differences, but both are very good. :)

Some of the characters and opinions that are expressed are not historically accurate.
White House Down With Channing Tatum
Very touching.....and encouraging...
At its core, Defiance is a character-driven drama wrapped in science fiction. I think it's a show that appeals to everyone, not just the sci-fi fans. The writers really take the characters to the edge this year, no punches are pulled and nobody is left unscathed. Plus, the female characters in the show are all very strong, complex, dynamic women-and some of the most dangerous characters on television!
hey hey
Your question is somewhat difficult to interpret, but perhaps what you mean to ask is, why do some movie characters work better as main characters than they would as minor characters. The answer would be that if the more interesting characters are the main characters, then the movie itself will be more interesting.
Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz, Alice In Wonderland have some common characters that are pretty easy
Willy Wonka
A movie that requires glasses and with the glasses the movie is supposed to look like some characters and actions are right in front of you.
