It sank because it hit an iceberg. It hit an iceberg because of the recklessness of its captain and the boss of the company who owned her. They were trying to break the transatlantic record,and knew full well they were in iceberg infested waters, but plowed on at full speed anyway. The Titanic also sank because the Titanic did not hit the iceberg head-on. If it had, the compartments would have closed around the leak and the Titanic might not have sunk. Another reason was that the steel in those days was brittle,particularly in freezing temperatures. the hull was also riveted,not welded.

The Titanic hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, gouging a hole in the hull and causing water to flow into the ship. This made it too heavy to float as it no longer had enough buoyancy (Google "buoyancy" to figure out the math behind that), so it sank.

Maritime historians, like myself, have spent many years studying this ship, and I have spent 14 years on the Olympic-class liners (Olympic, Titanic and HMHS Britannic) and when I see the information above, it is FAR from being accurate. Recent studies in the last few years have shown that as Titanic flooded and began to sink by the head; and that dipping is technically called "tipping". The ship only tipped by an angle of 11-13 degrees, so when the hull failure occurred (hull failure was when the stress on the hull became so great the ship broke in 3 pieces- 2 large and 1small, near the aft expansion joint). This is known as a "low-angle break". When the hull failure occurred, the keel still remained attached for a short time, the bow going under water is what pulled the stern vertical. The keel broke free and the stern stood on end at most, 3-5 minutes and began to sink and as it sank, the unequal pressure from air inside and water outside already began to do it damage. Once submerged, the deck compressed each other causing implosions, these may be the "explosions" survivors heard once the ship was submerged. The stern was severely mangled by immense pressure and impacting the ocean floor at tremendous force, that was greater than it was for the bow section, because it was filled with water.
This ship is now in a state of severe decay and deterioration and her integrity is unknown and is a dangerous shipwreck to dive to with manned submersibles.

Does that danger stop them? No...The salvage company that has salvage rights still feels the need to have to go down there....plenty of artifacts have been recovered. It's time to leave this ship in peace. Plenty can be learned from her, even after the ship no longer exists...which could be in about 50 years...give or take a few years, it will be determined on the rate of deterioration. By the way...accepted standard numbers for the passengers and crew lost and saved is: 1,523 and 705. Foundering time was 2:20 am Newfoundland Time.

There were many reasons, mainly the iceberg. but also cos the rivets weren't very well made.

No - mainly because she hit an iceberg, probably due to lack of caution by the bridge officers at the time!

I don't think there's any evidence that the materials were faulty: after all her two sister ships sailed successfully although one, the Britannic was sunk either by a torpedo or a mine. By 1912, when these vessels were built, engineering knowledge was sufficiently advanced for material characteristics and quality, and the strengths of fabrications such as riveted joints in heavy steelwork, to be reasonably well understood.
