There were a number of stereotypes- a better name is plot devices, used in this movie- and all somewhat questionable. First of all There is a sneaky implied linkage with Santa Claus. the two characters ( Wizard of Oz and Santa Claus) have the same number of letters. the story starts out in reality but uses a supernatural device- the cyclone- to propel the lead character- Dorothy Gale to the fictional land of Oz. The somewhat tetched concept of Good-Guy monsters and one-dimensional characters is used- to excess- we have three such characters, the Scarecrow ( Bolger) Tin Man ( Jack Hailey) and Cowardly LIon ( played by Bert Lahr)- None of these have names- by the way the Tin Man is NOT referred to in either the book or the movie- as a ROBOT. There is a use of the once-popular trap door device- to terminate that plot as a bad dream, which is a questionable dramatic device- for one thing it completely forestalls any cinematic further development- Nothing-from Nothing, leaves nothing. so it goes. I"ll take Anastasia any day.
