A military slap flare is a signaling device designed for use in low-light conditions, typically featuring a compact, cylindrical shape. It is activated by a quick pull or slap motion, which ignites the flare's pyrotechnic material, emitting a bright, visible light and smoke for signaling or illumination. These flares are often waterproof and can be used in various environmental conditions, making them reliable for military operations. They are intended for one-time use and come in different colors to convey specific messages or alerts.

Are there flare guns in the military? Yes. The most common places you'd find the hand held kind would probably the Coast Guard, Navy, and auxiliaries such as the Merchant Marine and Civil Air Patrol. In the Army, if we ever used them, it was typically Star Clusters fired from an M203 tube, but the advances in night vision technology have more or less eliminated the need for flares. I'd imagine it would be more the same for the Marines.
