Inspired in part by the 1948 film of the same name, The Naked City was a police and crime drama TV series filmed on location in New York City from 1958 to 1963. The series was mainly written by Stirling Silliphant and starred Paul Burke, Harry Bellaver, and Horace McMahon. (Burke, 1926-2009, was the grandfather of actress Alia Shawkat.)

The show's closing narration was "There are 8 million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them." Public familarity with the series made this a catchphrase in the 1960's US vernacular, usually meaning that someone's story or excuse was unique, irrelevant, overlong, or provided too much information.
