The word psychology is Greek and contains two Greek roots: Psyche meaning "mind" and logos meaning "study." Psychology (the study of the mind and behaviors) began around 500 to 300 B.C.
It all started with 3 main Greek philosophers: Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Socrates taught Plato and Plato later taught Aristotle. Socrates was famous for his belief "know thyself" with a strong belief in self-examination. Just like Plato's teacher, he believed knowledge should come from thought and reason, and not to gain knowledge from the senses because they can deceive us (visual illusions).
Aristotle, on they other hand, was a naturalist. He believed that knowledge should be gained from our experiences of the world around us, not just thought and reason. He believed that with careful observation of our sense we can gain knowledge.
