Although the year can be roughly divided into 4 three-month seasons, the weather associated with the calendar seasons can be quite different. The month in which each season begins is usually closer to the weather in the season preceding the equinox or solstice.

Meteorological seasons in the Northern Hemisphere

Winter - December January February (Winter Solstice December 21/22)

Spring - March April May (Spring Equinox March 20)

Summer - June July August (Summer Solstice June 20/21)

Fall / Autumn - September October November (Fall Equinox September 22/23)

Meteorological seasons in the Southern Hemisphere

Winter - June July August (Winter Solstice June 20/21)

Spring - September October November (Spring Equinox September 22/23)

Summer - December January February (Summer Solstice December 21/22)

Fall / Autumn - March April May (Fall Equinox March 20)
