Typically a black sheep is a creature that is different from the rest of its kind. A black sheep is not a common creature, as sheep are usually viewed as white (although there are different strains that have various types of coloring) and when somebody is called a black sheep (sometimes followed by: "...of the family") it means that they are bad. They are rogues - whereas the rest of their kind may have made something of themselves and understood the purpose in their life - the black sheep doesn't know how to do what the others do. In the end they will be treated differently by the rest of the flock.

This is what is called a metaphor whereby something is compared to something else. A black sheep is a scoundrel, a rogue or someone whom the rest of the flock will avoid, and not accept.

It is presumed that in times gone by, black wool was undesirable because it was difficult to dye (see Wikipedia entry for Black Sheep). This aspect of having an undesirable trait was later applied to anything that someone does which is not acceptable.
