On a more legal level, Shows are allowed to reference other people's intellectual property under the law of "Parody" or "Satire". A perfect example is Carol Burnett. in 2007, she sued FOX/Family Guy for using her 'Charwoman' character w/out her permission but the case was dismissed because it fell under the use of freedom of speech & Parody.
