Reel Women Archive Film Series The Producer Director Relationship - 2011 was released on:
USA: July 2011
This is one of those unfortunate questions that really can only be answered with a "that depends on the situation" type of answer. Often times a director will be sought after by the producers, read and approve the script, negotiate a deal, and then sign on to the project. If it is a big-budget film (i.e. Transformers, LOTR, etc.) you can expect the director to pocket quite a bit of money no matter what..especially if they are some of the best in the game. For the same film, a producer may make less money, but have active participation in the back end of the film. This means that based on the monetary success of the film in theatres/dvds/syndication, the producer may make a decent percentage. Also, there is only one director, there may be 15 producers! On the other hand, if the film has a small or miniscule budget, then both the producer and director may have their salaries deferred. This means they take no pay during pre-production so it can be used to finance the film. The idea being the more money put into the film, the more that it will generate upon its release. I wish I could be more helpful on this, but it really depends on the situation. I would say though that on average producers end up making more, but it's just a matter of what type of compensation deal they have negotiated.
