This is simplistic, as there is more, and it becomes extremely detailed depending on the clients needs, the subject, as well as the skills and depth of learning the clinician has undertaken.
The roles in psychology are usually that of the clinician and the client (patient) acting in concert in today's psychology to assist with a process called cognitive/behavioral therapy. This is where the clinician assists the client in the process of learning how to constructively moderate or learn behavioral techniques or skills that allow a smoother or less stressful integration with his/her social group and others. It is done with a series of similar events, each becoming less stressful as stress lessens with practice, and usually in the learning of a particular skill, or of releasing a fear, until the client is capable of understanding the need or reason (the Cognitive) and can accomplish the act--say one of meeting new people, speaking in public, being in a crowd (the Behavioral)--without overt or damaging stress, and has ability to continue improving on his/her own.
