Curtain and Drape are synonyms; they both mean fabric used at windows for decoration or light control. If you search out the terms draperies, drapes, drapery panels, or curtains you will find a host of different descriptions of how these window treatments differ. Typically, professional designers use the word drapery to refer to a quality lined, pleated window treatment extending to the floor that may or may not close along a traversing rod to cover a window. Whereas the term curtain is usually used to refer to a lighter weight stationary panel gathered in some manner along a decorative rod.

What is the best cleaning method for vintage barkcloth drapes unlined?

First, hold them up to the light and check for any holes. If you find any, repair them before washing. Give them a tug. If they shred (dry rot) they probably won't survice a washing. I've washed many, many pieces of barkcloth. Never bothered with dry cleaning and never had a problem. Get some Oxyclean and follow directions. It's kind of expensive but well worth it. Give your drapes a nice long 6 hour soak. You might be stunned by the amount of yellowing that comes out. The drapes may look and smell clean but the water could turn brown very quickly and you'd never know that the drapes were so "dirty" from perhaps years of nicotine (lots of smokers in the 30's, 40's and 50's). You may need to soak them more than once. Wash using a gentle cycle and don't put anything in the washing machine with them. I had a pair of barkcloth drapes once that had such a huge stain of some sort that I resorted to using bleach, and it worked beautifully. You might want to test a small section before going to such extremes. After using bleach though, you should soak in a vinegar and water solution (I don't know how much I used -- until I could smell vinegar easily). A fabric store clerk told me that this removes all remnants of bleach. If you don't get all the bleach out the fabric may weaken, especially if you're hanging your drapes in a sunny window. You say these are unlined so there should be no worries. Sometimes the lining will shrink and distort the shape of the drapes. If possible, hanging in the sunshine also helps to brighten. Drying by machine is O.K. on delicate or medium.

Is there a difference between drapes and curtains?

It depends on where you are. Most places and people interchange the two terms. From what I have seen Drapes are typically the lined nicer fabric that drapes from a rod to the floor and are considered more formal. Curtains can go anywhere, like above the sink in the kitchen, and are considered more casual. The primary difference between drapes and curtains is the material they are made from. Drapes are made of a heavier material than traditional curtains.
