They are similar in the sense that there is a huge difference in their immature stage vs their adult stage as well as the places they can inhabit. The butterfly begins life as a caterpillar, earthbound, and then forms a cocoon. It finally emerges as a butterfly with the ability to fly. The frog begins life in the water swimming around as a tadpole. As it matures it grows legs and is then able to walk or hop about on land.
