Who is Tom Swisher?

Pioneer of ADSL field applications for GTE, Tom Swisher helped build the information superhighway in Central Ky. During the mid 80s he worked in construction placing hundreds of miles of fiber rings and links throughout Lexington, Ky and the surrounding counties. In the 90's when GTE and Fuji wanted to test broadband technology for the average customer, Mr. Swisher was in the initial group of field technicians who worked the bugs out of the system. He later was a member of AT&T's worldnet test group to see if phone techs would be able to install Ethernet cards in customers PCs while installing their broadband service. He completed over 80% of all the successful installations done by this work group unfortunately proving only an outstanding phone man was savvy enough to work on the customer's PCs during the mid 90's. His later work focused on transferring customers to better types of field and CO equipment and improving their broadband experience. His work was made more difficult by the series of acquisitions and mergers that were common in the last ten years of his service in telephony. He finally retired in 2007 from Windstream Communications at the young age of 50.

What is an ADSL filter?

ADSL filter is a passive electrical circuit, (low pass filter) which is used along with an ADSL modem (for internet access). It can be built into an ADSL modem or is provided as a small box along with the modem. On one side it connects to the telephone network side. Other side has two connections one for connecting the phone and other one to connect to the ADSL modem. It essentially filters the high frequencies, which the modem uses, and thus prevents it from interfering with the telephone signals which uses lower frequencies for audio signals.

What is sdsl?

I hope the answer must have already been clear. But still, let me give you a proper conclusion. DSL modem can have two types, SDSL and ADSL. Though, most of the times when we use the word DSL, we generally refer to the ADSL modem, but in certain cases, it can even be the SDSL modem. Hence, this is the difference. An ADSL modem can send and receive data at different speeds while SDSL modem can send data at only one speed.

Can you use cable modem for ADSL connection?

No, a cable modem cannot be used for an ADSL connection. Cable modems are designed to work with cable internet services, which use coaxial cables, while ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) requires a DSL modem that connects via telephone lines. Each type of modem is specifically engineered for its respective technology, making them incompatible with each other.

What is the use of ADSL (direct) and wireless connection used to connect to the internet and supply an example?

ADSL is a method of multiplexing a broadband internet connection over an existing landline telephone wire that is still being used for voice band telephone.Wireless (usually Wi-Fi) is a method of connecting computers to a router via radio signals in the microwave band. It is usually used to support a Local Area Network (the range of the radio signal is limited) but the router may be connected to the internet via an ADSL modem, a SDSL modem, a cable modem, a satellite modem, etc. if desired.
