Having been a convict, here are my observations:

  • They are both told when to eat and eat only what it provided to them as rations(no choice). They do give 3-meals a day inside prison, however; NONE are very big meals and you pretty much feel your stomach growling for the first week.
  • They are told when to sleep (ie. lights out and lockdown for the night)
  • They are unable to leave the facility/grounds (except for extreme reasons like a funeral, convicts can apply for a furlough or day-pass as it's called)
  • Most are black (LOL, sorry but it's true - go read up on statistics)
  • They are both verbally abused by their master. In the case of the convict, this refers to the correctional officers. EVERYBODY in prison, including the social workers and all staff will curse you out just as bad as any inmate. Funny how they do not show that on Lockup Raw, LOL
  • Physical violence always a hair-line away at any moment inside. Slaves were beaten by their master but convicts are beaten up by each other. Just know when a fight breaks out inside on the other side of the room, you are still not safe because bad fights are usually ruses for the real attack that is happening on the opposite site of the room. Get the CO's looking one way and beat the real person up in silence inside a cell where the door will lock the moment you close it. The door can;t be opened then unless a CO in the bubble (command center) does so electronically.

Now one subtle difference is that slaves were required to work and earn their keep, whereas convicts are NOT FORCED to work. It is possible for a convict to acquire a job inside, which is done so mostly to help bide time rather than for purposes of money. The money isn't great but it can be used for commissary (which are snacks and essentials like tooth paste and toilet paper). Plus the prison then takes a portion of your gross amount way and call it a "housing cost". It's essentially working for your keep, except; convicts are not forced to do so. They just have the option to work or not.

What is the difference between slaves and convicts and What is the difference between convicts and blackbirders and What is the difference between slaves and blackbirders?

Slaves were people who were forced to work without pay and were considered property. Convicts were individuals found guilty of a crime and sentenced to punishment, such as prison time or hard labor. Blackbirders were individuals who coerced or kidnapped people into forced labor, often in the context of the transatlantic slave trade. The key difference between convicts and blackbirders is that convicts were legally sentenced for a crime, whereas blackbirders were involved in illegal and often violent practices of capturing individuals for forced labor.
