Fundamentally, a sun is a star, so whatever you can say about a star you can say about a sun. For a long time, though, this was not appreciated and in the time until it was realized a distinction grew up that a sun was a big round thing and a star was a twinkling point of light. Also, stars were not thought of as having planets until quite recently (it turns out they have quite a lot). Some poeple still use "Sun" to refer only to OUR Sun, while all the other suns are "stars." This is really a distinction without a difference, though, and it would be best not to adopt it.

Three things you can say about every sun/star:

1. It heats itself by nuclear fusion 2. It's more massive than a planet 3. It's not as massive as a black hole.
