The longest river in France is the Loire (1013 km). The second-longest entirely in France is the Seine, which runs through Paris. Other major rivers are the Garonne, plus the Rhine and the Rhône which have part of their course into other countries.

The main rivers (ranking by length in France) in France are the Loire, Seine, Rhône, Garonne, Meuse and Dordogne.
- The Loire is the longest French river (1013 km). It had an irregular flow which made it less navigable.
- The Seine is the second-longest (777 km) but is a major navigable river and runs through Paris.
- The Rhône is 812 km long (French part 545 km).
- The Garonne is 523 km long not including la Gironde, a 120 km estuary that it shares with the Dordogne.
- The Meuse is 850 km long (French part 486 km).
- The Dordogne (6-longest) is 483 km long until it reaches the Gironde estuary.

The Rhine is quite long (1,325 km) but does not, properly speaking, run in France. It just borders France for 188 km, separating France from Germany.
