children should learn things like problem solving skills and develop their thinking to the extend they - on their own- learn what is respectable and why they should have manners. ok that was probably silly ;) but the truth is the whole environment the child is in matters, home, school outside etc. leave the intelligence building (this will benefit them in the long run) for school and the manners for home etc and they will still pick up both, if its the parents wish

No you should not smack your parents because that is vary disrespectful. Do you like it when your parents smack you everyday on purpose? Than don't do that to your parents that shows you don't have any manners at all.
