In The Two Towers, Gandalf explains how he escaped the Balrog, in Return of the King, There's a flashback of Boromir's death, and in Fellowship of the Ring, when Frodo, Aragorn, and the others are with the Elves, Frodo see's Sauron's eye. Those are examples of Flashbacks from The Lord of the Rings.
