Why do you think Dally look sick when Johnny was beaten up by the socials in the outsiders?

Johnny represented innocence to Dally, who had lost his own innocence at a young age. Throughout the book Dally goes to great extents to protect the innocence in Johnny, and when Johnny finaly dies it causes Dally to snap and intentionaly get himself killed because he feels that all that was good and innocent in his life is lost along with Johnny. When Johnny is jumped and beaten by the socs it upsets Dally because he doesn't want to see Johnny become hardened to the world. The beating causes Johnny to become paranoid and carry a switchblade, evidence of the loss of innocence that Dally so strongly abhorrs.

How did Johnny grow in The Outsiders?

The book doesn't say much about Johnny's childhood, except for the fact that his father and mother abuse him a lot. Johnny often turns to the gang for support and encouragement, but what he receives is more stronger than that: love and affection. He often says most of the gang is lucky, because they have someone who care for them, but they often assure him that he's got the whole gang, which causes Johnny to disagree because it's different from being loved by friends to being loved by family.
