Pony boy is scared when the soc approaches him because the soc is armed and Pony knows that he will not win the fight and not only that but Pony knows he could end up dead.

To answer the second part of your question (I am guessing you are talking about the change Pony went through after he ran away). Pony realizes he has to toughen up to survive. He sees himself as a greaser and greasers are not wimps. Pony wants to be like his brothers and his friends, who are tough.
