Darby Jones was the husband of Sara Jones, one of my mother's friends. I knew Darby's younger son, Clifford, and mother Sara (a den mother) from attending Cub Scout meetings at Union Elementary School (near downtown L.A.)-- circa JFK era. Darby, a charming giant of a guy, would occasionally drive my mother and me home from cub scout meetings in the early 1960s (in his red MG sports car) -- he was a very nice and humble individual. I knew he was a former actor who played in Tarzan and Zombie movies but be never bragged or talked too much about his interesting movie career. My mother, Florence, kept in touch with his wife throughout the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Little-known tinsel town fact: Darby and Sara had one of Hollywood's earliest interracial marriages (he being black, she Jewish); I believe they got married in the late 1940s. We learned about Darby's passing in 1986. He died of prostate cancer in Los Angeles.
