Damsel means a young unmarried woman, or Girl. It is oddly, the root of mademoiselle, condensed somewhat ( Dam-Zelle!) There was a poem or song called the Blessed Damsel. I wonder who it was about, possibly Joan of Arc. I do not think St.Mary as she is always seen in a Motherly role ( Blessed Mother) and by definition a Mother ( at least in the religious sense-and normalcy here) could not be a damsel, but a Madame or Married woman.
