While he didn't invent them, he GREATLY improved Edison's design around 1890. In fact, Latimer was even hired by Edison in 1890 to help improve the light bulb even more.

In the photo above, you see some of the Edison pioneers, who worked with the great inventor Thomas Edison. But only one of them was black-- Lewis Latimer. While he was a respected draftsman and an inventor who helped Edison improve the light bulb, there is no evidence Latimer ever got rich, however. On the other hand, as one of the few black inventors of his time, he most certainly seems to have enjoyed a middle-class life, and he had more status in society than many black men in segregated America did.
