June 21st, which the Summer solstice for those of us in the Northern hemisphere, is the winter solstice for those in the Southern Hemisphere. Their summer is our winter, their spring is our autumn, and so on.

This is due to the ~24 degree tilt of the earth's axis of rotation, which stays at a static angle throughout earth's revolution around the sun. This angle is responsible for the amount of solar radiation (sunlight) a given point on the earth would accumulate throughout a day, which is a single rotation of the earth about it's axis.
